Mobile Thing #23

  • Go back to your thoughts/ideas about  mobile devices and apps. Has anything changed as a result of this experience?
    • Not really.  I guess I'm more aware of somethings and maybe more likely to seek out a solution through an App now.  Maybe.
  • What were your favorite Things and discoveries?
    • Favorite thing: TED talks App.  Loving it!
    • Discoveries: App utility and ease.  I have discovered I can tell which Apps suck faster.
  • How did you connect with others doing the 23 Mobile Things?
    • I went to their office and talked to them about it and commented on comments they posted on my blog/
  • Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
    • I finished 4 days early.
  • What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or content?
    • Not much.  I think the self paced format works well.  I like the variety.
  • If we offered a another 23 Things program like this in the future would you participate?
    • Sure!
  • How would you describe your learning experience in one word or in one sentence, so we could use your words to promote 23 Things learning activities to others?
    • Appy (to the tune of Happy sung by Pharrell Wiliams)

I'm very much enjoying Droid of the day.  It's fun and there are some cool Apps.  Also I find browsing on Quixey to be easy and helpful.  I found some great random name generator.  No more with all my NPCs be named stuff like Bill Bilson or Jack Jackson or Andrea Andreason.  I like the gambling type Droid of the Day thing too.  You never know what you're gonna get.  I'm listening to the Robocop Theme as I type this and it makes it sounds so very epic.

You Try!

Hmmm, favorite App?  Well the App I use most is probably the Facebook App, but mostly for utilitarian purposes.  Communicating and the like.  The App I find the most useful is probably the Think bank App along with the Chase bank App.  The App I find I turn to when I'm bored is the Kindle App.  The app that most intrigues me is Snapchat.  I stand by my statements about it being developed for congress people to send photos of their junk, but I still find it intriguing.  And the App I feel I should use more than I do: HBOgo.  Why am I not watching Game of Thrones right now?  I laugh every time the Mountain crushes the Viper's skull.

Mobile Thing #20

Oh Candy Crush, how glad I am no longer to be addicted to you.   I've moved on to the Doctor Who bubble game.  Not as fun but out it's officially licensed.  I'm a gander but I haven't made the leap to phone gaming.   I'm old school.  I do Pen and Paper RPGs and Boardgame.  I think I'll be playing Firefly the Boardgame tomorrow night.

I've been using spotify for a while.  I like it fine.   I find I like Amazon's MP3 player better.  The radio stuff on Spotify is cool and all but I just want to listen to my stuff most of the time.  What I really want is a super easy way to put MP3 audio books on to multiple devices and be able to have all the devices know where I left off on an audio book.   So far the audible apps the best I've got but I can't add my own cool stuff like Doctor Audios.  I also checked out Road Ninja. That'll be fun when Theo and I road trip to Gen Con in August.

So first I tried the Eat This Not That Game.  It's okay.  Verging on fun even, but I learned very little from it.   Next I tried the TED tasks app.  So awesome!  I love that I can tell it hire much time I have and select a topic and boom!  There's something cool to watch.   Most impressive.  And I learned something: in Japan blocks are named not streets.

Mobile Thing #17

So I tried the Beer Activist app first,  but I couldn't find it so I tried the SE Minnesota app.  It was acceptable.  A little generic but it got the job done.

Mobile Thing #16

I tried Soundcloud. I was able to find copious amounts of dubstep and record myself saying "hello".  I could find this useful for sending myself audio notes.  It might even be faster than going some things.

Mobile Thing #15

Infographics I'm familiar with as a concept and I've created some.  Mostly for my desk shift busyness data.  So much easier in graph form than looking at numbers on a piece of paper.  However,  none of the apps listed were available to me.  I tried some other app, but all it did was show me a bunch of info graphics.  I couldn't crate anything.  Not especially helpful.

Mobile Thing #14

Vine is so fun!  My other blog (http://jonallenfanblog.blogspot.com/) has a few Vines of Jon Allen doing various things like demonstrating his shelving technique and eating.  Love the bit sized videos!

Mobile Thing #13

I tried Deck Slide Presentations. I hope I never have to use it for anything real.  I could see it being useful after a few years of patches and upgrades.  Also not great on a tiny phone screen.  Cool that it exists,  but the functionality just doesn't feel like it's all there yet.  I could see using it if I was desperate.  Laggy and you had to pay for the really cool themes.

Mobile Thing #12

I tried wattpad.  It was pretty sweet.  For books in the public domain,  I'd totally use this ap.  Interesting fanfiction choices too.  All in all a nice interface and plenty of content.
